Barrens Circuit

The Open Hunt went to Ash Barrens. I was feeling sluggish, so Talin kindly volunteered to lead. She took us around the woods and rocky areas, where we saw some impressive spawns of Blight and Mange Ferals. We ended with a stop at the Rebel Base.

Open Glen Hunt

The Open Hunt returned to Mountain Glen, one of the best fits for a large mixed group. After we cleared the first two floors of the Ruined Castle, I wasted several minutes trying to split the group. In the end the consensus was that a split was a bad idea, so we all went to hunt T'rools.

After a good circuit through the T'rool caves, I started moving us homeward. We were surprised at the entry cave with an unusual spawn of Mammoth Stone Arachnes. In retrospect, I think we could have prevailed, but I made some bad calls and helped to wipe out most of the group. Fortunately a rescue was prompt in coming.

Metz Split Hunt

The Open Hunt went to Metzetli Island. It used to be my favorite place back when the Open Hunt was a much smaller affair. I had been a little worried about taking a large mixed group there, but perhaps needlessly.

Balbo took my place, as we were a little light on healers. We went toward the Gloaming caves and then split up. I am not sure whether the split could have been done better or it was just a bad idea under the circumstances. The larger main group was left with several fighters, but none of them were bricks. It ran into a large spawn and all but Suu'ub fell, but eventually we recovered. The Gloaming group also came back to help. Then the main group ran to the Cove.

Book 1 Interlude

After two weeks of new Ash, I thought we needed a change of scene. A couple of people were interested in training Book 1, so we ventured into the Pitch Caves.

We made it to the destination without too much trouble. Many thanks to Cinnamon and PureHeat for running webbers to PC2.

We might have been able to go to PC 5, but we were running tight on time. We headed back to town. K'vynn was in a hurry to get to his knighting ceremony--congrats!--so he ran ahead, fell, got ported to OV, and departed.

Return to the Barrens

The Open Hunt returned to the southern part of the new Ash Island areas, which some people have started calling the Barrens. The group was big enough--just under 30 at the peak--for me to consider a split, but the healer ratio was too low. (The Open Hunt seems especially popular with fighters.)

One circuit was enough for over half of the group. With only two healers remaining, I took a break and asked Balbo to join. The smaller group ended up looking for EBow, who had gotten separated and fallen earlier.

New Ash

The Open Hunt did a tour of the southern part of the new Ash Island areas. It was a big group, about 25 of us.

Without an Atkus-boosting Mystic, several people had a difficult time hitting the creatures. A couple wanted to leave early, so Creed and I tried to escort them from the Cemetery to the exit. I underestimated how difficult that would be. The snell just before the exit was very busy, so we had to wait for the rest of the group.

Then the remaining people went to the Rebel areas. Unfortunately, those who were there for the first time didn't have enough esteem to enter their base.

Cammie Marries Blindkan-C

Failed PC Trip

Inu Teisei organized an open trip to Pathfinding Book 2 at the regular Open Hunt time. After the trip last October, I was hopeful that we could succeed again.

The group got to PC-5 without any trouble. We had three Full Mystics—Hepta, K'vynn, and Phiros—to teleport us, and the landing in PC-6 was easy.

In PC-7, we set up in the first pit and waited as a couple of people lured the rest of the large and winding snell. A lurer fell and called for help. A couple of healers mistakenly believed that she was behind us, due to the twisting of the passage. They inadvertently lured many webber noids that had spawned in PC-6. I heard from someone later that there were webbers coming from the north as well. That was the end of the trip.

I'm sad to report that some ugly cursing was shouted in frustration after the group fell. We were all disappointed, but it was a good-faith error. Open trips depend on the good will of a lot of people. There is no place for disrespect.

Anyway, the Book 2 route is rarely traveled, so I learn something every time. Next time I will have a better mental picture of PC-6 and PC-7.

Ruined Castle Split Hunt

I tried splitting the Open Hunt again. At first we all went as one big group to the Ruined Castle in Mountain Glen. Then I had Nyla pick a higher level group to go to the Ctenizidae lair. The 11 of them were Evita, Han, Kalian, Leinis, Lightbringer, Nyla, Seld'kar, Shiner, Suu'ub III, Talin, and Trev.

The main group of 20 people stayed in the main area of the Castle. We had a nice mix of all levels, so the Arachnes were challenging yet not overwhelming. Salazar provided helpful boosts. Toward the end, we went to the first snell of the T'rool caves.

As the main group was leaving, we bumped into the elite group. Everyone seemed in good spirits. I hope to use a similar split in other areas.

The NO in NOOB

Jeepers organized a trip to the New Orga Outback (NOOB). The group captured the first snell easily. The second snell, however, proved too much. Dinsdale and Gremlins fell and were chained away by Razzia (four were seen). Califas, Jeepers, and J'nder were too deeply lightning-fried to be raised, so we had to abort.

Splitting the Open Hunt

Today I tried an experiment with the Open Hunt. It has been difficult to find places that can accommodate everyone who shows up, from 1st to 8th circle. I usually pick high level places that challenge the higher level exiles and offer a sightseeing experience to the rest. My idea for today was to split into two hunts, one going to a very challenging place and the other going to a mid-level destination.

For the high level hunt, I chose Sarra. I asked Kalian to lead because he had the most experience there. Talin recruited Xel to open the Mystic entrance for us.

Capturing the snell beyond the safe cave went smoothly. Kalian did a great job in leading us around Sarra. The exit was lightly guarded, so we left by the power of our own feet—which is never guaranteed. Yay!

People had some time remaining so we went to the Earthwyrm cave. It took us only a few minutes to clear it, and then we called it a day. Thanks to all who participated, especially Kalian for leading.

I heard mixed reviews of the mid/low hunt. At least a couple of people felt abandoned, and the average level of the turnout was closer to low than mid. I will look at the visionstones and listen to more of the post-mortem discussion to see how the experience of the lower part of the split can be improved.

Book 1 Again

The Open Hunt went back to pathfinding Book 1 in the Pitch Caves. I intend to go there about once a month as long there is a demand. We had about 40 people show up, though a few left soon after reaching Book 1.

For the most part, things went very smoothly, thanks to the strength of the group. We waited for some pathfinders with saved ranks to get more than one chapter. Then we made our way to PC 5 before heading back.

We did have a tricky moment going back into PC 1. An all-in had been called, but the situation changed as we entered. I got caught on the wrong side of the noids, but I made the best of it by running many of them to the southeast pit. The group quickly recovered, captured the cave, and headed home. Thanks to all who came!

Abyss and Noth

Today's Open Hunt started at the Abyss. I hadn't been there in a long time, and a few had never seen it before. I served as the runner, and we got set up on the first try. The place was good for a while, but with only one snell, it wasn't really enough for a whole hunt.

The group then moved to Dal'noth. In retrospect, I think that we were overpowered for Noth, but there was some interest in going there, and we had two full Mystics with us.

We had some griping about creatures being killed too quickly, especially by Blindkan-C. During a break, K'vynn teleported him to the Village, where they exited before the rest of us. I felt ambivalent about that move, as it didn't feel in the team spirit. However, the consensus seemed to be that BKC got a necessary lesson after ignoring several warnings. It was pretty funny too.

Sightseeing in Orga Lands

Based on earlier input, I thought that the Trainers' Grotto beyond Hatreds' Hollow might be a good destination for the Open Hunt. Orga resistance in HH was light. We made a brief stop in the Grotto, but it turned out that no one who was qualified to train with Rodnus or the other two trainers decided to do so.

Thanks to our pathfinders, Creed and PureHero, a trip from the Grotto to Orga Village was possible without trudging the long way through the Orga Outback. The group made it to the snell just outside OV, but we had lost Zin. First, Suu'ub tried a solo rescue run, but he too fell. We tried taking the whole group (or at least those who were awake) to look for Zin and Suu'ub. Commander Nate got separated from the group, but he inadvertently found our lost friends before he himself fell.

Then I decided that a smaller rescue group would be able to move quickly without losing more people or falling. Six of us, guided by Shalyn, moved through OOB and finally found Zin, Suu'ub, and Commander Nate. Unfortunately Nate was asleep for a long time, until after the Open Hunt had ended, ~~so I think he had to depart~~. (Edit: See Gremlins's comment. A group rescued Commander Nate later.)

After we reunited with the rest of the Open Hunt group, we proceeded to capture OV without a hitch. It was the first time for some people, so we took a look at the Orga idol inside the sacrificial hut and the well near the entry to the New Orga Outback. Then we took the path to Orga Camp and back to Puddleby.

Terise and Zin Join OWE!

Terise duMiroir was inducted just before the Open Hunt. Terise was once a member of the clan Open Hands, but she had been clanless for a long time. She has frequently joined OWE and PAG for various Sunday hunts over the last six puddleyears.

After the hunt, Zin was inducted. He is a close friend of Artworx from their time together in the library.

The Trouble with T'rools

The Open Hunt returned to the T'rool caves west of the Ruined Castle. That area has proven to be very good for a mixed group. The T'rools are tough, but not too fast. With four mystics in attendance, the Atkus boosts also helped people get their tags.

Noivad led us into the caves and through the blue crystal. The exit to the Myrm hive is where we were wiped out, mostly by a few Fire Myrms. It happened so quickly that we didn't know what hit us.

I departed (as did PureHeat) to come back for a rescue. Many thanks to everyone who came to our aid: Farhope, Foxx, Jeepers, Knightshade, Mephisto, Nyla, Pookie, PureHeat, Sean, Suu'ub III, Thoomilicious, ToriAnn, and Xenos. Special credit goes to Suu'ub for leading the rescue.

The entry to Mountain Glen was busier than usual. It took us a few minutes to get set up and clear the snell. At first, the rescue group started to go back to where the Open Hunt had entered the T'rool caves, but Suu'ub said that going through the Hive would be faster.

The fallen were happy to see the rescue party, and we all were rewarded for our bravery and compassion. We quickly made our way out through the Hive and back to Puddleby.

Pathfinder Escort

The Open Hunt went to Pathfinding Books 3 and 1 and then continued on to Pitch Cave 5 before turning back. We broke a turnout record with 39 attending, including several exiles emerging from the library after very long sabbaticals.

The trip was ably led by Kalian -- who tried to refuse my request, but I wasn't paying attention and announced him as our direction caller. Oops, sorry, buddy!

All in all, it was a very satisfying trip. However, I was sad to hear that Ghrr departed. I think he was left behind at the waterfall snell. We could have easily gone back for him, but I guess he didn't want to be a bother. It's hard to keep track of people in such a big group, so I strongly encourage everyone to make noise (or toggle madly) when they need help.

Darshak Ambush!

As I mentioned in a previous post, Purple Haze planned a two-pronged expedition to hold both the Annulus in the Ethereal Plane and its Material Plane equivalent on Tenebrion's Island. MaryJane made it open to all, and she asked me to lead the TI group. Based on PH's recent visits to the TI Hole, we expected the TI side to be the easier mission and apportioned the exile talent accordingly. Perhaps discovering a Darshak Spy in our midst should have tipped us off to expect the unexpected, but we didn't think much of it at the time.

The TI group made fast progress with little Darshak resistance, until we reached the snell just south of the Hole. Then Darshak elites swarmed around us. Some were able to escape and regroup, but many fell in a place that soon became far behind enemy lines. I departed and rejoined others at Centaur Island.

At first we had only a small trickle of Darshak elites to fight. We made our way back toward the Hole, determined to complete our assigned task. We were driven back to the beach more than once. It seems that, in addition to the Darshaks who pursued us, more of them were spawned by their priests at the beach.

The battles at south TI beach were tough and frustrating. The small opening in the wall worked to the Darshaks' advantage, as it made getting a foothold difficult. A couple of times I was able to make a fort in the southeast corner and hold several Darshaks away from the entrance, and Zaerion and others did something similar on the western side.

I heard that the EP team had met with difficulty too, and toward the end, some of them came to TI to help. Finally, after much advancing and falling back, we reached our fallen and called it quits. The Darshaks were prepared for us, so the next attempt will have to be a more secretive affair. Many thanks to everyone for their help!

Valley Stomp

Hi there! I recently joined 3 other Elephants for a stomp through the Valley. Now I got the feeling this was a leisurely stroll for them, but for me it was super intense warfare!

Here's a sketch of me lightly tapping a Sasquatch on the butt and sending him to bed without dinner. Yeah, I'm bad. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get more sketches, cause it was tough out there!

Kalian's Museum of Death

Kalian was a little bored during the Open Hunt, so he decided to spend the whole time collecting corpses to stuff. Afterwards, he invited everyone to visit his home. I had been inside once before, but he had done some redecorating. The main feature was a square of monsters in threatening poses. I bet that's where Kalian goes to relax!

MG Hive and T'rool Caves

The Open Hunt returned to the Mountain Glen area. It had never gone to the new Hive, so I chose it as our starting point. Suu'ub III did a great job in leading us. With such a large group -- 22 at the peak -- the narrow tunnels were definitely crowded.

Suu'ub had us leave the Hive through the T'rool Caves by the Ruined Castle. This place was more challenging, and I was glad to have more room to move. A few people wanted to stay longer to hunt in the Castle itself, but too many either had to leave or at least wanted a break.

Cammie Joins OWE!

After the Ethereal Forge trip, the attending Elephants gathered in town to induct Cammie into the clan. However, it wasn't easy! Puddleby was under invasion by Rippers, Tearers, Sazajas, and unusual rats. On the way to the Clan Hut, we ran into a Tearer, which felled some of us. We were healed quickly, and we performed the entry rite for Cammie. Tuska Cammie! Tuska OWE!

Ethereal Forge

The Open Hunt went to the Ethereal Forge. I had heard people saying they wanted to go there, and I figured it would be a nice change of scenery, to keep the Open Hunt from getting stale. I advertised the trip with Koppi and the Sentinel, so we got a record turnout -- 32 people. I was especially happy to see Polgara, who hadn't been in the lands for a long time!

We started at the Dal'noth kyuem. I thought that a portal from there could be lured, but I was mistaken. The first Ethereal Plane snell was heavily occupied by ethereal creatures and undine. With a few healers alternating as a runner, we eventually captured the snell.

The next snell, our destination, was relatively easy. We spent a lot of time waiting for people to make their items inside the Forge. Some mystics wanted to make a side trip to the Ethereal Tower, but after some consideration, it seemed like a bad idea to me. People hadn't come for a Tower trip, and the risk was substantial. Even if we had reached the Tower itself, leaving via Portal Island would have been impossible because of two stronger-than-usual Greater Deaths that had foiled Purple Haze's EP trip yesterday.

Where the T'rool Things Are

Today's Open Hunt saw us back at what has become a favorite hunting ground, the Mountain Glen area. We returned to the T'rool part of the Arachne Caves by the Ruined Castle. With a good turnout, we were stronger than the last time, so we didn't have to run at the sight of a tearer or two. (Noivad even started to study tearers on the trip.) J'jh led us on a circuit in the caves until it was time to head home. It was a pleasant hunt.

Book 1 Casualties

The Open Hunt went to the Pitch Caves for Pathfinding Book 1, with a short stop at Book 3 on the way. As we gathered at the waterfall, Creed spoke some words that turned out to be eerily prophetic.

When we reached the well outside of PC 1, J'jh successfully lured most of the webbers into PC 2. Those who needed Book 1 got it, and then we gathered northeast to retrieve J'jh. I figured that afterwards we would go on to PC 5, as we had done the last two times. It was not to be.

Noivad grabbed J'jh, and we prepared to kill webbers. However, at least 8 webbers came, so we had to retreat. We made a couple of attempts to lure them back to PC 2, but without success. Eventually Noivad, Kalian, and I managed to chain everyone out, and we started to make our way home.

At that point, Creed and Retolyk were our only standing healers, so I sunstoned a request for a rescue group to meet us at the waterfall snell. Talin answered my call for help and organized a group. Then we made a dash for the cave where Book 3 is. I and a couple of others got trapped and fell to lightning.

The few still on their feet kept the cave and the area just outside it secure until the rescue arrived. They managed to raise everyone, and we ran back home. Many thanks to all the rescuers!

Santa Chicken

After a successful FMOCR for Asenath, a few people (including some Elephants) were sitting in Town Center. Santa Chicken made a brief appearance! He didn't have any gifts to hand out yet, but he is apparently busy planning for Bawkmas. Ho ho ho!

Back to Mountain Glen

Just as the time for the Open Hunt rolled around, SlartyGM announced a conference in the Fairgrounds. I thought that we should go to a place that would make it possible for people to catch up, in case some people joined us late. It turned out not to be an issue -- no late joiners.

Our group of 12 went to the Mountain Glen. We took the long way to the Castle. With a good balance of higher level fighters, mid-level taggers, and healers, we traveled at a leisurely pace.

We reached the area just outside the Castle's front door, and we also hunted the first snell of the Arachne Cave. The level of challenge felt just right for this group. We had to retreat a few times, especially when we found tearers, but nothing truly overwhelming.

Orga Steal from Museum

The Orga stole a chest from the Museum. J'nder got people to come out of the library to recover it. Orga Camp had a lot of bolters and large death vermine, but the group managed well enough.

It turned out that the Orga had stolen a bronze breastplate. Balbo won the roll for it, which he later passed on to Torin. The group then went through Hatred Hollow to Orga Village. Balbo won the roll for the uli flower, so it was definitely his lucky day!

Castle Chaos

Today's Open Hunt was a chaotic affair! We went to the Ruined Castle past Mountain Glen. It was a large group -- 17 of us -- and I neglected to think about the low healer ratio before we left Town Center.

A couple of Elephants were late and wanted to join us. Noivad had trouble finding the path to the Castle and had to give up after a while. Lucero came later and fell on the way. When we went back for him, several people took the opportunity to leave early. Some seemed frustrated with the slow pace.

The remaining 12 pressed on. Though we knew that reaching the waterfall snell was a longshot, we decided to keep going as far as we could. When cavern wurms and some tough arachnes spawned, we had to take shelter in the small semi-safe room until we recovered. Then we made a dash for the Kitchen Cooler, where we healed up again before heading back home.

A Reunion Hunt

After the Open Hunt on TI ended, we returned to Puddleby to help with the chigger invasion. The situation seemed to be more or less under control, so the Elephants present gathered in the clan hut to induct Creed.

After the ceremony, we went to fight chiggers. As usual, the Juliosaur burrowed to safety when its health got low. Afterwards a few of us were sitting in Town Center, and I decided to play a little good-natured prank on Creed. Now she and J'jh have a matching look, hehe!

TI Tour

The Open Hunt gathered on Centaur Island with the idea of doing an ethereal quest for Blackhole. However, it became clear that only about half of us had ethereal amulets, and no one seemed ready to lead the way. So we settled for a trip to Tenebrion's Island.

The resistance from the Darshaks and ethereal creatures was light. We managed to see the Darshak Village and Venables Outpost. We heard that Puddleby had been invaded by chiggers, including a Juliosaur, so we wanted to get back to town quickly. Before we left, however, we did go to the misty cave near the zoo and the TI Annulus.

Noivad Sighting

Umbrion's Keep

The Open Hunt went to Umbrion's Keep. Blindkan-C had an albino maha pelt to make into a cloak. Suu'ub III was interested in going through the fire maze for the ethereal helmet quest.

The place was challenging, mostly because it was unfamiliar. We had a few rough moments, but Suu'ub did a good job as leader. However, it was hard navigating without a good map.

Toward the end, we lost our way and found ourselves in an Abyss-like area, which we left quickly. Then we had to exit KI via the Ethereal Plane. We managed to get out of EP, but then the room on Portal Island was swarming with ethereal creatures, big and small. After waiting a while, we were rescued. It was disappointing that we didn't get either a cloak or an ethereal helmet, but we just didn't have enough time to continue.

Balbo Joins OWE

Balbo joined OWE in a small ceremony. (Although we never seem to be in the lands at the same time, we know each other well from the library.) He is a sixth circle healer with more or less balanced training, and he enjoys using his asklepian staff.

Orga Stronghold

After a long hiatus, EAT and PAG teamed up again for a return to the Orga Stronghold. (PAG no longer holds regular hunts, but it will make an occasional planned trip to destinations that require a large force.) With four full Mystics attending (Asenath, K'vynn, Lundar, and Xel), we went to the back door entry through the Slate Caves.

We did encounter a problem teleporting. Asenath tried to port the first group -- which she had done many times before. Something went wrong, and she alone ported. Xel made another attempt, with extra attention to procedure. He too ported alone. We prayed to the gods for help and took a short break. Then K'vynn used his stone. This time everyone was teleported, though in an unusual way that showed the hand (literally!) of the gods at work.

With CJ Parker's excellent leadership, the Orga territory was no problem. When we reached Katpus, she seemed to have made a little progress in building a catapult, but we did not have the part she needed for the next step.

Our final stop was Trillbane, the master pathfinder. Unfortunately, one of the first to enter the clearing was Kani, who immediately went into the path to the waterfall snell in Dredwood. Several people followed him. The path is one-way, so some of them who wanted to train with Trillbane missed their opportunity until the next trip, probably not for a few months. Some pathfinders still with the main group did start training with Trillbane.

Originally this OS trip had been billed as the last one for PAG. However, the good turnout seems to have convinced people that an occasional expedition -- perhaps once every few months -- would be a good idea. I will certainly miss the weekly hunts, but I am glad that we can still muster some enthusiasm for the journeys that require a big army.

Artworx Returns

Mountain Glen Castle

The Open Hunt returned to the Mountain Glen. As we headed toward the Castle, a group already there asked for help. We made our way slowly and eventually met up with them.

After all were on their feet, the combined group entered the lava pit room. However, no Ctenizidae (big red spider) was there.

We stayed long enough for people to look around some of the quieter rooms, and then we headed back home. Special thanks go to Theo for serving again as our guide.

Castle Costume Party

The Open Hunt went to the new area, which Crius calls Mountain Glen. We saw the watchtower, a small camp accessible with pathfinding, the T'rool cave, and the abandoned castle. Many people came dressed in costumes for the Feast of Tsrrin, and we found two more costumes -- a rottweiler and a giant snail.

The Cavern Wurms in the northern room upstairs were very challenging. We may have been able to kill them, but we were running low on time. On the way out, we had some fun tangling with a Mammoth Recluse Arachne, a Deth'kin, and a few other 'kins.

LA's Book 2 Trip

Inu Teisei and Laughing Academy organized an open trip to Pathfinding Book 2. It was well attended and turned out to be a great success. I was a little worried at first because we were missing most of the hard hitters we had last time (way back in March). We did have some close calls, but Mujin-kun, a few rangers who had studied webber noids, and a couple of blood bladers filled the offensive power role nicely. Blackhole did a great job in leading the group.

I mostly stayed toward the rear and helped with the occasional backspawn, or reinforced the front line when the fighting got heavy. I was happy to have some opportunities to practice my stonegirdle technique. The sketch below makes me look more important than I actually was. The noids lost interest in me after only a couple of seconds, and then Mujin-kun squashed them. However, my timing was good, and my judgment can only improve with practice.

PC Practice

The Open Hunt went to the Pitch Caves today. With Inu Teisei's Book 2 trip coming up next week, I thought it would be good to practice in a place with webber noids. Last week it took us a long time just to get through the Malachite Caves. This week's group was roughly the same strength, but I thought we would see how far we could get.

PC 1 had relatively few webbers, so we cleared it and continued. We ended up going all the way to PC 5 and back without much trouble. I hope our success is a good sign of how next week's expedition will turn out.

Rain Forest

Eli and Natas led a hunt to the Metz Rain Forest. Eli had a good time getting lasties on Gloaming Wendeckas on the way. We were happy to meet plenty of challenging creatures in RF.

Just as we were ready to leave, we were ambushed as we came out of the treetops. I was in bad position and fell almost instantly. The others retreated into the treetop as Natas held off the three Haremaus and other critters. However, Natas was blocked from the tree, so he had to run north to the safe tree by the river. Even more Haremaus showed up, so it took us quite a while to get the whole party back together. Eventually we were reunited and swam back to the Cove. An exciting hunt!

Darshak Expansion on TI

PAG went to Tenebrion's Island to see whether anything was new in the Darshak area, which a new sign calls Venables Outpost. We found that one of the buildings has freshly dug tunnels. Also, that snell has a path that leads to the field outside Tenebrion's castle (just west of Flander's Field).

TI and Metz

The Open Hunt started out on Tenebrion's Island, but it proved too difficult for the group. The rescue took a while, but eventually we relocated to Metz. Another group was hunting the Gloaming area, so we stayed to the northern beach and jungle areas.

I was happy to see a few new faces today. The changing roster is always a challenge, but it's a good test of leadership. Sometimes the more experienced exiles get bored or frustrated. However, the younger ones have told me that they enjoy going to places they rarely see. Puddleby is such a small community these days, so I think it's important that the "ubers" spend some time now and then with the up-and-coming fighters and healers.

Largo's Fen Treasurer

I was cloud gazing in town the other day when I was blessed with the presence of the recently returned Largo. Even in his absence, he settled disputes from afar with his LargoStars and sketched impressive, insightful portraits. He is a Renaissance man for sure. Our conversation led to his new presidential campaign. As we chatted, he intuitively sensed my immense trustworthiness and wisdom. So he offered me the position of Fen Treasurer.

I accepted, wholeheartedly. What an honor! Who better to handle Puddleby's finances than a Dwarf, or more particularly, Hunter - Puff Higgy - the Ultradwarf! As the head of the Hunter Fund, Puddleby's most exemplary charitable organization, I have excellent financial advise and progressive ideas for the future President Largo. My credentials and communal oriented views are legendary. I am often seen wearing tan, as I am one of the people.

Just last year, in honor of our leading pledger, I built the Kalian Home For Homeless Halflings. To date, the Hunter Fund has contributed over 2 million coins to worthy causes. Meanwhile, our economy is suffering under the reckless spending of the current administration. As Fen Treasurer, I will ensure our coins are spent carefully. Largo is a friend of the common man, the working man, the proletariat. Largo will revitalize Puddleby and bring untold prosperity. We need change! We need Largo!

Lava Wurm Cave

I came out of the library to hear that there was trouble in East Forest, but it had nothing to do with Orgas. A cave to the northeast of town had some very hard-hitting creatures called Lava Wurms, as well as Lava Beetles, Lava Walkers, and Lava Elementals. I can't remember ever having been to the place, but others had. ~~However, we did discover deeper caves that no had seen before.~~ [Edit: My mistake. See comments.] Overall though, the area is pretty small. Once the first cave was captured, the rest was pretty easy.

All Quiet on the Eastern Front

The Open Hunt went to the Slime Cave and Hippie Hollow to see what remained of the new tribe of Orgas that we fought over the last two zodiacs. The Slime Cave had only slimes, which were quickly dispatched. Hippie Hollow was challenging because of its heavy lightning, but no more so than was normal before the Orga Uprising. Our pathfinders found nothing new.

We are left with a mystery: Why did the new Orga tribe retreat? It seems unlikely that they would give up so easily. Maybe they only wanted to test their new biological/magical creations and then go back to their labs to make refinements. I wouldn't be surprised to find that our next encounter with them will not be so easily won by the forces of Puddleby.

The Education of a Stone Dwarf

It's been a little over a zodiac since I got enough Corsetta training to use my stonegirdle. Many people call it almost useless, but I like it a lot.

I can use it about once every ten minutes, so I have to be selective. On the other hand, I have found it most likely to be useful in emergencies, so I have to be fast enough to activate it before I fall. I am sure I have a lot to learn to hone my judgment, but I am inspired by the example set by Manquilor, Garr, and Farhope.

PAG at Orga Wall and DTN

PAG went to the East Forest to check on the new tribe of Orgas. A gruesome warning left by them in lower East Field, just across the bridge, threatened a new attack soon. We discovered that, for the moment at least, their walls are unbreakable. However, we did find that there were small holes in the wall that allowed us to hit through it.

It appeared that we couldn't do much about the Orgas for now, so we went to DTN for the rest of the hunt. We had the good fortune to find a selenite crystal for Axell!

Orga Salad

Today PAG went to the new Orga Farm, which was recently established in East Forest, right next to the University of Puddleby. We used the University as a safe haven. Its closeness allowed the fighters a chance (for a few seconds at a time) to kill the Dredlocks by the entry to the Farm while the healers rodded the lightning. After several attempts, we captured the Farm! It seems that the Orga are interested in growing kudzu. Don't be surprised if they use it against us in the future.

After that great success, we decided to try DTN. The combination of Orgas, including bolters, and webber Noids was formidable, but eventually the first cave was ours.

At one point outside DTN, a carrot hat appeared on the head of Natas, the Carrot Zo. It disappeared when we went back into the cave. Then a little later, three of the healers — Dandelion, Han, and Praetorius — found themselves wearing vegetable hats.

Not long after our victory in DTN, the Orgas struck back. They began pouring into the snell outside DTN. The early Orga waves were mostly cannon fodder. We killed hundreds of Orgas and Death Vermines, but still they kept coming. Eventually the weaker Orgas were accompanied by Dreds, Hatreds, Slimes, and even a Loathing. They overwhelmed us, and those still standing had to retreat closer to East Field. Those who were fallen and waited were eventually rescued.

The Open Hunt had an excellent turnout today — 22 exiles! I was also happy to see several Elephants in attendance. We went to the Pitch Caves, up to PC 5.

In addition to the Noids, the four blood bladers entertained us with their falling antics, and Revlis was busy draining corpses of their blood. We also heard gossip on the sunstone about Noivad and Jady, who (some say) got married last night. Jady, however, remembers nothing of it.

Ranger Heaven

Blackhole wanted to hunt Death Trap Noids, and a small group started to do just that. However, there were too many webbers near the entry for us to have a good chance of making progress.

At Mujin-kun's suggestion, we changed venue to Pitch Caves. It turned out to be great for the two Rangers in the group. Blackhole got enough Malachite Arachnoid lasties to get the message for 600, and Sythe made progress in studying Crimsons. Mujin led us to PC 4 and back without breaking a sweat.

Selenite Quest

The Open Hunt had a relatively strong group today, so I figured we would try for the selenite crystal at the Gloaming caves. However, there were a couple of fallen in Dred Wood, and Toto wanted to study Book 3, so we made a quick trip there first.

Once on Metz, we made good time and had only a couple of close calls. We found a selenite crystal, which J'jh won in the die roll. Thanks to everyone for a fun hunt!

TI and DTN

Stinkfist wanted an escort to Tenebrion's Island in order to donate to Barny. PAG took him there, and we saw some recent changes to the island, including newly charted waters by the coast and a Darshak wall that was extended.

Then we went to Death Trap Noids. We got to DTN 3 easily and were luring the fourth cave, when a combination of a big lure and a backspawn downed most of the group. A few escaped, a couple departed, and the rest were rescued pretty quickly. Unfortunately DTN 4 didn't have a selenite crystal.

Pre-PC Caves

The Open Hunt went to the Book 3 cave to help out another group that was stuck. Some of them joined us, and we decided to hunt the three caves before the Pitch Caves. J'jh did Valley-style runs, and we used kudzu when needed.

There was a little confusion among some of the younger fighters about when to enter and why we needed zu in some places. I will have to remember to give more explanations so everyone will be on the same page. Anyway, we managed the trip very well and were never in serious danger. Thanks to everyone who attended!

Asklepian

Some days ago, I had the chance to speak with Chiron about his experiments in advanced healing.
He had burned out his own Asklepian staff, and was seeking fresh selenite crystals to further his work.
I gave him mine, and he promised to attempt to build an improved Asklepian with it, after some consultations with Rady Ann and Elaph.
He was impressed with my own experiments with the raw crystal, which I found to act just like a moonstone except for one thing. If selenite could allow multiple self heal pulses, I would have switched to using it instead of the moonstone itself.

Today Chiron appeared in town once again and sought me out by sunstone.
I was busy with a group searching for more selenite crystals, and he wanted to join our hunt, but since we were quite far away already, we pressed on. Unfortunately, we saw found new crystals.
When I returned to town, Chiron was waiting for me, and returned my selenite in the form of an Asklepian.
He told me quite a few items of interest: per discussions with Master Hekus, a healer must demonstrate mastery of basic skills by reaching the Fourth circle before being able to use it. Beyond that, Chiron stated that the Asklepian definitely is not for everyone, and that some mysterious ratios (Rady knows more about the pesky details than he does) are best. Rady Ann is formulating a training regimen for the Asklepian, and while Proximus is helpful for using it, this is not quite the right skill and has limited value. Rady Ann considered setting up for training in the Healer Hall Fourth circle room, but found it too crowded already, so she is still deciding where to go. Rady and Elaph should be more accessible soon, however. As it is, the Asklepian does not burst heal nor self heal, but Elaph is experimenting with bursts. He also warned me strongly that the current version is unstable, and may well break rather catastrophically. And it only works on wounded exiles sharing me, and presumeably not on fallens.

I had a chance to test it out during a hunt in the deep Tok'Han lair.

First, I was surprised at the low spirit drain compared to a caduceus, since if someone walked outside my range they simply failed to be healed rather than draining my spirit away inefficiently. This is great, since I can't chase 5 folks at once!
Second, it worked well to heal everyone within range, but it was clear that healing speed drops with each new exile being healed so that my total healing is about the same, just distributed widely instead of to just one individual.
Overall, I think it is a fine tool and I'll find ways to use it, especially as I can develop a larger range. But it is no replacement for a caduceus.

Hopefully we'll learn more soon.

Deep Toks

The Open Hunt went to Deep Toks today. We considered going to Tenebrion's Island, but reports of Greater Deaths there ruled out that idea. The Toks hunt was a success. The initial pathfinding entry was a little tricky, and we had a couple of over-lures (as shown in the sketch), but overall our group today was well-matched for the area.

Ortlinde Revealed

Twilight Recovery

Today's Open Hunt went to the Twilight area of Metz. At first we had several healers, but Suu'ub III and Jeepers left early. We hunted the entry for a while, but then an Ancient Greymyr cut short our fun. Only Terise and I were standing. We huddled in a corner and eventually got almost everyone up. It was good to be able to walk home this time.

Return from Gloaming

Today's open hunt took us back to Metz. Slayer called directions for the first half. We met Shiner and Pun'isher later, and Slayer handed over the lead to Shiner.

We went into the Gloaming caves with the idea that Shiner would lead us through the river path and save us a long walk home. However, there was a jam at the path so most of us didn't make it. Those of us left behind started back the long way, and Shiner got Lorikeet to join him on a run toward us from the beach.

We got into trouble on the narrow rocky snell next to the jungle. A few of us survived behind a kudzu wall until Lori and Shiner arrived. Once recovered, we tried the river path again, with more success that time.

Torin Enters 7th Circle

I finally passed the test! I spent more time in 6th Circle than some 7th Circle fighters have been in Puddleby. Apart from not hunting nearly as much as they do, my 270 fell blade ranks do me little good in the test. The FB helps me a lot on real hunts though, so I have no regrets.

At the Open Hunt (every Sunday at 11:30 AM Pacific), our group escorted Zeitgeist to Pathfinding Book 3. I was thinking of going to Metz, but many people wanted to stay in the area and hunt the first few parts of the Pitch Caves. Unfortunately our runner-and-zu setup failed, and a backspawn in the Waterfall snell doomed most of the ones who managed to get out. I asked for a rescue a couple of times, and many of us departed to help the others. After several attempts, we managed to get almost everyone back to town. Thanks to everyone who came, for the hunt and/or the rescue.

Deadly Sarra

PAG went to Sarra today. It was a gamble, and we knew it. Although we had plenty of talent with us, we weren't able to kill fast enough. Between the acid cobras and the dinosaurs, the healers had a hard time keeping us healthy. Overwhelmed by spawns ahead of us and behind us, we made a desperate dash for the exit, but to no avail.

Jades

After the Puddleby Players' performance, we had an open hunt at Jade Noids. In all, roughly 20 people with a wide range of skills showed up. The venue seemed to be good for a mixed group. The low/mid fighters hit the Jades, and the noids in the third cave were a challenge for the higher level fighters. I hope the word gets out that an open hunt on Sundays will be a regular event.

Open Metz Hunt

Since PAG no longer holds Sunday hunts, I thought I would try to host an open hunt every Sunday. I picked Metz because it offers some challenge for higher level exiles but isn't impossible for low/mid exiles. Overall, I was pleased with the hunt. Other than being overwhelmed at the end — which happens even with more experienced groups — we did well and had fun.

Darshaks' TI Outpost

At the regular PTF time, a group went to Tenebrion's Island to keep the Darshaks under control. We made it to the Darshak Outpost. We went into some underground rooms that were new to me, at least. The entry was a cellar with stolen beer and beer-making supplies.

A laboratory was equipped to study kyuems, among other things.

A common room had a conference table (with Puddleby invasion plans!), a lounge area, a food preparation station, bookshelves, and weapons.

A small bedroom is probably reserved for the Outpost's commander.

Yor Loses His Pants!

I was minding my own business in the casino when I heard Yor walk in. While I knew he had a serious gambling problem, I had no idea it'd gotten this bad. Living up to his high roller reputation, he played several hands of blackjack with bets of 20k each and lost most. Then he bet 80,000 coins, everything he had left, on a single hand! If only we all had that kind of money to throw around.

Donarius Bringle, otherwise known as Dongle, was stunned by Yor's rampant avarice and indulgence in vice. He looked on as Yor was dealt the 6 of gems and the 8 of leaves for his 80k hand. Jack Vintian, the dealer, had the A of cups and another card face down. Unable to afford the insurance, Yor had a difficult choice to make. He decided to hit and got the 6 of swords, giving him 20!

It was looking good for Yor, who would pocket 160k if he won. Then it looked even better when Jack flipped over his card to show a 3. With an A and a 3, for a total of 4 or 14, Jack hit. However, he flipped over his card to reveal the 7 of cups. Jack had 21! Yor's fortune had quickly come undone. Notorious Y.O.R. glared with utter outrage for a moment, as he had just lost a stunning 80k.

From there it only got worse. Apparently Yor hadn't counted his coins accurately, which isn't surprising for a Zo. Since Yor was short on his bet, Jack was forced to collect Yor's clothing as collateral. The sketch to the left is not for the feint of heart. Yor growled while he stood there in his skivvies. Confirming what Dongle has been claiming for a month, Yor's underwear was a bright shade of pink.

Cute little Firbi seemed to take a liking to the now far less fearsome looking Ghorak Zo. Dongle and I, however, considered the spectacle quite abhorrent. The stripped Yor didn't smell pleasant either, so Dongle was kind enough to impart some advice. I hope Puddleby will spare Yor the public ridicule and embarrassment, as it's painful enough for a gambling addict to go broke. Perhaps we could give him some coins to get him back on his feet, or at least donate some respectable knickers for him.

Orga Activity

Some Orga attacked the east fields of Puddleby yesterday, as they've been known to do on occasion. I joined up with the group that had just repelled them from the fields and we ventured into the Orga Camp. Scouts said it looked quite dangerous, so Clam went in first to flicker. As we entered we saw the very heavy fire he'd drawn fly by, which we knew would be upon us in a moment.

While the OC is often guarded by dozens of Warlocks, this time there were also a dozen Hemlocks and a handful of Dredlocks. That firepower meant we couldn't stay in long. Another odd note is that there were Razzia present who made off with some of our fallens. However, due to our strength in rangers we soon decimated their forces. Some of us were also fortunate enough to find a few Hatred chests during the battle!

With the Grefo Topper and Fergar Egley altercation, and now this, I haven't seen the OC have so much activity in quite some time. We should keep a close eye on the Orga.

Just Yell

After a recent hunt into the rain forest of Metzetli, we prepared to leave through the Ethereal Plane. As usual, Yor opened the portal and scouted first. However, he fell while trying to run the snell and hadn't told us to enter. So we knew it must've been rather deadly inside. J'jh ran in, then the rest of us followed when she called us. It was indeed dangerous. Very soon Kalian and I were the only two left standing.

Although a couple people yelled immediately after they had fallen, they didn't yell again. The situation quickly became very aggravating. Aside from Yor and Han, the fallens failed to respond. I ran around the snell for more than a minute without a single word from any of them on where they were fallen or if they were on Kalian's chain. Thanks to the complete silence, I wasted a lot of time and health.

Since I had Han on my chain and saw that Yor was on a chain, I headed for the exit. Of course the other fallens still weren't yelling, so I didn't know Kalian was also headed for the exit until it was too late. I barely saw a couple fallens on his chain go by as my route closed off due to the critters following him. Those critters got some shots off, then a lightning bolt brought me down just after Kalian exited. So unfortunately Han and I were left to depart.

Fallens can provide very helpful information for those who are still standing, especially when there's chaos. They can also spare someone a great deal of frustration. All they have to do is yell...

Book 2

I organized a trip to Book 2 recently, which was a great success. An awesome group of 32 very skilled exiles breezed right through the Pitch Caves. Asenath and Ansset teleported us, and Xel lent us a stone. We made it to Book 2 in under 90 minutes, and a total of 18 people were able to begin their training of "Trillbane's Commentaries on Ways."

Many of us decided to continue deeper into the Pitch Caves, as we had such a strong group and had gotten to Book 2 so quickly. In under 90 minutes once again, we'd made it all the way to the end of the caves and picked up a couple azure spores. Then we went home through the EP, which has been quite a bit more dangerous lately, but everyone made it back safely. Thank you to everyone involved who made this such a great trip.

Justice

An impressive zoo had been assembled in town center. Apparently it'd been even more majestic, until Stone Cold viciously slaughtered several of the friendly creatures despite public protests. To prevent this massacre from continuing, Naferu took him to court. Stone Cold was found guilty and some of the crowd threw pies at him in jail.

Still out for blood even in jail, Stone Cold challenged Natas to a duel. Natas seemed to have some reservations, as he'd seen the carnage Stone Cold left behind in the zoo. Being a lowly ranger and all, he was unsure he could hold his own against such a foe. However, Natas indeed accepted the challenge without hesitation "for the honor of the zoo." After Stone Cold's sentence was finished, the two headed to the arena.

The bout was short-lived, as was Stone Cold. Kalian took the opportunity to teach Stone Cold another lesson, because Stone Cold had made some offensive remarks to him that were too vulgar to mention here. So Kalian took him on a little jaunt through the Ethereal Plane. Unfortunately Kalian's chain slipped off at some point and he doesn't know what happened to Stone Cold. Thus thanks to the noble efforts of Naferu, Natas, and Kalian, the honor of the zoo had been restored.
